Decoding M4F and M4A: A Guide to ASMR Audio

Who knew you would require a dictionary to navigate through the jungle of naughty stories? In the realm of NSFW ASMR are many abbreviations, and in this post, we’ll decode three of them: M4F, M4A and M4M.

M4F meaning

M4F stands for ‘male for female’, which means that an audio is intended for a female audience. The recording will feature a male voice actor, and the listener is presumed to be a woman. As you listen, you will come across phrases such as ‘my beautiful wife’ and ‘good girl’. And, if you’re enjoying NSFW content, expect references to and sultry descriptions of female body parts, such as curves and breasts.

M4A meaning

Now, M4A is a bit more inclusive. “M4A” stands for “male for all,” meaning the audio is designed for both guys and gals, though still narrated by a male voice actor. You won’t find any gender-specific language. For example, instead of being called “my girl,” you’ll hear more neutral terms like “my love.” Gender-specific body parts and language tied to gender identity are also off the table in these audios.

M4M meaning

M4M stands for “male for male.” In this case, a male voice actor records the audio specifically for a male audience. When it comes to NSFW ASMR, these steamy recordings are meant to cater to gay men.

A bit of history

As far as I am aware, M4F and the other terms originated in the depths of Reddit. At first, they popped up in dating posts to indicate what the poster was looking for – for example, “M4F” meant a guy searching for a woman. Soon enough, though, the NSFW ASMR and audio creator communities borrowed these abbreviations to better describe their content and clarify who they were targeting.
